The Best Podcast in Golf

Golf Content

One of the things I would like to do on this blog, other than make you laugh (see #DADGOLF), is to bring to your attention to some great golf content that is available to you to help you improve your game. I have spent thousands of hours consuming golf content and I have a few sources that I think every golfer should have on their radar.

The first one I would like to introduce to you is the Earn Your Edge podcast. For anyone that is looking to improve their golf game, the Earn Your Edge podcast is a must follow. Today’s post is all about earning an edge. Let’s dive in.

Altus Performance

The Earn Your Edge podcast is hosted by Cameron McCormick and Corey Lunderberg. Cameron and Corey are the founders of Altus Performance. Altus Performance is a one of a kind golf academy based in Dallas, Texas. At the academy, Corey and Cameron work with some of the brightest stars in both the men’s and women’s game. Clients of Altus include:

  • Jordan Spieth
  • So Yeon Yu
  • Andrea Pavan
  • Beau Hossler
  • Daniel Berger
  • Harry Higgs
  • Tyler Grahl

One of the names on that list is not like the others, but yes, I am a client of Altus. I have taken two lessons with Corey and one lesson with Cameron. I started listening to the Earn Your Edge podcast back in 2018 while I was living in San Diego. After moving to Texas in 2019, I reached out to Corey Lundberg to schedule a lesson. I wanted to see the Altus operation first hand. The experience blew away my expectations.

Corey and Cameron could not have been more accommodating and that spoke volumes to me. Cameron and Corey certainly have bigger fish to fry when you look at the list of names I attached above. However, they both were gracious enough to set aside some time for me to come take a lesson with them, simply because I listen to their podcast. That, to me, is impressive.

But back to the podcast.

The Earn Your Edge Podcast

On the show, Cameron and Corey interview some of the best players in world to find out how these players have separated themselves from the pack. They focus their time on unpacking the tools and strategies the best players in the world use to draw out their best performing self. Most of the guests on the show come from the world of golf. However, they also interview a wide variety of people from other fields. They have interviewed everyone from the most prominent names on the PGA Tour to bestselling authors. They have even mixed in an interview with a hockey player that any Dallas Stars fan should know and love, Brett Hull. KIN’ RIGHTS!

Where to Start: Tony Romo – Episode 30

You could go the traditional route, and start listening to the podcast from the very beginning. However, my favorite episode to this point was Episode 30 with Tony Romo. The episode was released on February 27, 2019. The first time I listened to the episode was on my honeymoon on the way to play golf. (I told you Meg was a saint). It was an hour drive to the course, so I had a little time to kill on the ride over.

For most of us, Tony Romo sticks out in our mind as that Quarterback that just never could quite win the big one. That was my perception of Tony Romo before listening to this episode, but the Tony Romo episode on Earn Your Edge completely changed my mind.

TONY ROMO is a GENIUS.

The Mindset of a Pro

Throughout the episode, Tony talks a lot about how he took the long-term view of his improvement. He didn’t worry about short term success. The results of the day did not dictate his mindset moving forward. He would stick to his guns and keep pursuing his end goal.

On the podcast, Tony tells a great story about trying to improve his throwing motion as a young player for the Dallas Cowboys. Tony had been promoted to the backup QB, but he knew he needed to improve his throwing mechanics to be a successful in the NFL. After meetings were done for the day, Tony would go out and throw into a net, trying to incorporate new movements into his throwing motion.

After working on the move on his own, Tony decided to test it out in practice. He talks about going out to practice with his new throwing motion, and missing receivers five yards over their heads.

Well, long story short, Tony gets demoted back to the third string QB. However, his response to this demotion was indifferent. Most of us, would have abandoned the idea and went back to our old throwing motion, but Tony stuck with it. Tony decided that the feedback he got from that practice just meant that he still had work to do. The motions he was working on weren’t going to work in live action. He needed to continue to work on that part of his game until he found a better solution.

That is the mindset of a pro. That is how you earn an edge. After a demotion to third string, most of us would worry about being cut. Not Tony. Tony knew what he needed to do to get better, and he had the courage to stick with it through the growing pains.

Do You Want to Earn an Edge?

Episodes on the Earn Your Edge podcast are filled with these types of stories. Corey and Cam do a great job of drawing out these learning nuggets for the listener. Tony Romo, statistically, is one of the greatest QB’s to ever play in the NFL and if you listen to Episode 30 of the Earn Your Edge podcast you understand why. Tony was able to “earn his edge” by using failure as a spring board to success.

The Earn Your Edge podcast is a fantastic source of information for any player looking to improve their game. I cannot recommend it enough. If you are someone that is trying to take your game to the next level, then you need to start listening to the Earn Your Edge podcast. Go on iTunes, turn on your notifications, and download the podcast. It is that important.

As my father always says, “don’t make me ask you twice!”
