As a huge golf fan, I can watch just about any golf on TV and enjoy what I am watching. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t head over to The Golf Channel to see what’s happening in the world of golf.
Earlier this week, The Golf Channel featured live coverage of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational. Which got me thinking, that I would love to see more amateur golf on TV.
Now, I should say that The Golf Channel has been airing college golf on its channel for many years now. However, it is not nearly as prevalent as some of the bigger college sports. Take college football for instance. You can tune into a college football game, almost 5 nights a week in a non-COVID year. We get college golf on TV, maybe once a quarter. That is not enough in my opinion.
With big names like Colin Morikawa and Mathew Wolff instantly having an impact on the PGA Tour, I think it would be really cool to see these guys introduced to the golf world before they turn professional. One of the best parts about being both a fan of the NFL and college football, is that you get to see how guys handle the transition from the amateur to professional game.
I think it would be really cool to see that in the golf world.
In 2018 Oklahoma State won the NCAA Championship. Two of the guys that played on that team, Mathew Wolff and Viktor Hovland, are now prominent names on the PGA Tour just two years later. I remember watching that National Championship and thinking these dudes are going to be world beaters. And sure enough they are.
Being able to see them play before they turned pro seems like a bonus now that they are stars.
When FOX relinquished the TV rights to cover the USGA tournaments, I was really bummed out. I thought FOX did a tremendous job of airing the USGA Amateur Championships and I was sad to see them leave the golf space. FOX’s coverage of the US Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championships was fantastic. I also enjoyed their coverage of the US Junior Amateur Championships.
If you have never tuned into college golf or amateur golf coverage, I would highly suggest it. The quality of play is super high and a lot of the championship tournaments feature match play. It’s cool to see players battle it out in individual matches trying to earn a point for their team or to win a USGA Championship.
Again, I am a big fan of the amateur game and I hope we see more of it on TV in the future.
