After I posted my picks for Draft Kings last week, I had a couple people ask me what exactly Draft Kings is and how does it work. So, before I review my picks from last week, and tell you which players I like this week, I thought I would explain exactly how Draft Kings works.
“Draft Kings is a daily fantasy sports contest and sports betting app. The app allows users to enter into daily and weekly fantasy sports-related contests.” The contests you can enter through the Draft Kings app can be public or private. Public contests are created by Draft Kings that allow anyone with an account to enter. Private contests are created by users that allow only people invited to the game to enter.
For me, I solely play a weekly $5 private PGA Tour contest with a few friends. Each week on Draft Kings, guys in the field are given a purchase price. Using a $60k salary cap, you must pick 6 players for your lineup. When the contest begins, you receive Fan Points based on how your players perform. You get positive points, for pars, birdies, and eagles, and you get negative points for bogies, double bogies, etc. At the end of the week, the person with the most Fan Points wins.
I hope that clears up any confusion from last weeks post.
Last week I suggested the following players:
- Daniel Berger
- Tyrell Hatton
- Kevin Kisner
- Harris English
- Tiger Woods
- Adam Scott
Here is how they did:
Players | Finish Position | Fan Points |
Daniel Berger | Solo 3rd | 117.50 |
Tyrell Hatton | Tied for 25th | 92.00 |
Kevin Kisner | Tied for 4th | 103.50 |
Harris English | Solo 2nd | 130.50 |
Tiger Woods | Tied for 58th | 70.50 |
Adam Scott | Tied for 58th | 74.50 |
588.50 |
Last week might have been my best week ever on Draft Kings. I had 3 guys finish in the Top 4 of the tournament. Needless to say, I won the weekly contest against the boys. NOT A BIG DEAL!
BMW Championship
Now, we are on to the BMW Championship. The BMW Championship is the second to last event on the PGA Tour schedule. This year’s BMW Championship is at Olympia Fields in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Similar to last week, I focused on the guys that have been playing good golf leading up to this event or players that fit nicely into my budget. Here are my picks for the week.
- Jon Rahm $11,000 (FPPG: 87.4)
Honestly, I am nervous about this pick. He has been playing some decent golf as of late, but Rahm is the second most expensive player in the entire field. I like expensive things just as much as the next guy, but sometimes, it is smart to just buy the value brand. I mean, in some cases, Fruit Rings taste just as good as Fruit Loops. Sure, you don’t get Toucan Sam on the box, but do you really need that anyways? Jon Rahm better preform or my week will be like spoiled milk. See what I did there?
2. Adam Hadwin $7,100 (FPPG: 70.6)
Just like in life, when you splurge in one area, you gotta cut back in another to make up for it. As the middle child of three boys, I have direct experience with what it means to cut back in other areas. Hand me downs are sweet, only if you don’t care what you look like. Adam Hadwin is one of our value plays this week. He has made 14 cuts out of the 16 events he has played. If Adam gives me four solid rounds this week, then I will be happy.
3. Abraham Ancer $7,700 (FPPG: 72.9)
Ancer has only missed three cuts this year, and I like his swagger on the course. He missed the cut last week, but I am hoping that he rebounds well and has a good week at the BMW. If not, no worries, it’s only my daughters college fund I am playing with here.
4. Tyrell Hatton $8,300 (FPPG: 86.8)
Sometimes, the market just doesn’t correct itself the way it should. We employed this same value play last week. For example, Jon Rahm has an average FPPG of 87.4 and he cost $11,000 this week. Tyrell has an average FPPG of 86.8 and he is $2,700 cheaper. If Jon Rahm is the boujee brand. Tyrell Hatton is the knock off.
5. Louis Oosthuizen $8,000 (FPPG: 71.0)
King Louis has one of the best looking swings in golf and he has made 13 out of 15 cuts this year. I have taken some risks this week, so I am trying to balance the scales by picking a few players that have proven that they can make the cuts consistently. Louis fits that description.
6. Ryan Palmer $7,600 (FPPG: 69.0)
Ryan Palmer has five top ten finishes this season. Two of those top ten finishes have come in his last four events. Last week he finished tied for eighth. Hopefully he can keep up the good play and finish high up on the leaderboard for us this week. Funky swing, but I like his game.
That’s it. Those are the six guys I am going with this week on Draft Kings. The only thing better than taking money off your friends once, is doing it twice in a row. We will look to do that this week at the BMW Championship.
And remember, sometimes, Fruit Rings are just as good as Fruit Loops. Write that down.
Until next time,
Enjoy the chase!
