Draft Kings: Safeway Open

Tour Championship Review

Another disappointing week at the Tour Championship for my Draft Kings lineup. At the end of last weeks post, I went out on a limb and picked Webb Simpson to win the tournament. That ended pretty poorly as Webb slowly fell down the leaderboard as the week progressed. Xander Schauffele and Tyrell Hatton had nice weeks, while the rest of my lineup floundered. A few tough weeks in a row has me feeling like it is time to shake things up. This week, I am going with a fresh cast of characters.

Safeway Open Lineup

If you have followed this series since I started posting my picks three weeks ago, you may have noticed that I pick a lot of the same players every week. This strategy has not provided the best results. It’s time to hit the reset button, so for this week, I will be picking six brand new players. Here goes.

Pick #1

Jordan Spieth $9,800 (FPPG: 63.1)

This pick is all heart and no brain. Usually not a good idea when money is involved. However, Jordan Spieth is one of my favorite players and the creme usually rises to the top. Jordan has had a rough go as of late, but I am still on the bandwagon. He is a client of Altus Performance and if you have followed the blog recently, then you know that I am a big fan of Altus’s work. If you want to read my review of the Earn Your Edge Podcast by Altus Performance, you can follow this link -> The Best Podcast in Golf. I am hoping 2021 brings the resurgence of Jordan’s game. He is my first Draft Kings selection for the Safeway Open.

Pick #2

Denny McCarthy $7,900 (FPPG: 66.0)

If I asked you who the best putter on Tour is, how many guesses would you need to guess Denny McCarthy? Well fact is, McCarthy lead the Tour in strokes gained putting for the 2020 season. I don’t think I can remember seeing a single shot of this dudes PGA Tour career, but apparently this man can roll the rock. The last memory I have of Denny McCarthy comes from his amateur golf career when he made it to the Semifinals of the 2014 US Amateur. In an event, I am going with him as my second pick this week on Draft Kings.

Pick #3

Wesley Bryan $7,100 (FPPG: 77.8)

Due to a couple of injuries Wesley Bryan has fallen off the map. In the last two years, Bryan has only played in 9 events. However, he did make all four cuts during his 2020 season, and he had a higher FPPG in those four events than both of our first two picks this week. The former trick shot artist has plenty of game, and I think he could outclass this field. I hope to cash in big on Wesley Bryan this week as he is my third pick.

Pick #4

Maverick McNealy $7,300 (FPPG: 63.9)

“We’re going ballistic, Mav, go get him!” – Goose, Top Gun

It feels like Mav has underachieved so far in his professional career. The former number one ranked amateur in the world has zero wins on the PGA Tour. After breaking several of Tiger Wood’s records at Stanford, I thought this guy would burst onto the pro golf scene. However, that hasn’t really panned out. Maybe he is just late to the party and gets his 2021 season started off with a win. Wishful thinking, but I could really use a nice surprise this week. Mav is pick number four for me on Draft Kings.

Pick #5

Mark Hubbard $8,100 (FPPG: 66.4)

Candidly, I really don’t know much about Mark Hubbard other than he used to play events on a minor tour in San Diego, that also had an amateur division that I entered into from time to time. Word is that Hubbard is a great putter with a funky stroke. He had two solid weeks points wise at the Wyndham Championship and The Northern Trust over the last month. Hopefully, he has a few bullets still left in his gun for the Safeway Open this week. Mark Hubbard is pick number five.

Pick #6

Joel Dahmen $9,500 (FPPG: 64.8)

If you are looking for a golf podcast to listen to, Joel Dahmen has had a couple of fantastic appearances on the No Laying Up podcast recently. Linked here -> No Laying Up Podcast. Joel made 18 of 22 cuts in 2020 so I think he is a pretty safe pick this week even though he is $9,500. With a pretty soft field, I think Joel Dahmen has a great chance at contending for the win. At a price of $9,500 he is the second most expensive guy in our lineup. He better perform.

  1. Tough lineup.
Speith is having a tough year but decent value for him. Hopefully his putter shows up.
No idea who the other guys are.
Good luck, you are going to need it.
