Draft Kings: Tour Championship

BMW Championship Review

Let’s start with the good news. Last week, I had to completely revamp the site do to some issues I was having with Facebook. Therefore, almost no one saw my Draft Kings selections for the BMW Championship. It wasn’t a bad performance, but in the famous words of Ricky Bobby, “if you ain’t first, your last.” I did not contribute a winning Draft Kings line up for the BMW Championship. I have to be better.

On the positive side, Jon Rahm won the tournament. He was my number one selection last week, so it was good to see him win. Everyone else, “that ain’t worth a F****** S***!”

Of the five other players I selected, not one of them finished inside the top `10. To say I am disappointed, would be an understatement. Nonetheless, we have to turn the page and move on to the Tour Championship.

Tour Championship Selections

With only 30 players in the field this week, we are going to have to be crafty with our selections. One key to winning in Draft Kings, is to find the hidden gems. You have to try and get a few guys in your lineup that no one else has, and then hope those guys have a great week. The tiny field this week only magnifies that key to success. So, without further delay, let’s take a look at who I have selected on Draft Kings for the Tour Championship.

Pick #1

Xander Schauffele – $8,900 – (FPPG: 80.6):

Bit of a rant here, but when is the last time you have seen Xander in featured group? I mean, the guy is ranked 10th in the OWGR and you almost never see him hit a shot on TV. I am a little biased here, but this guy gets less love then he deserves. Xander has proven he is a big game hunter and he won the Tour Championship as a rookie. No other rookie had won the Tour Championship prior to Xander. NOT A BIG DEAL!

I look for him to have a good week this week, but unless he’s leading the only way to even know he is in the tournament, is by checking the leader board on pgatour.com.

Pick #2

2. Tyrell Hatton – $7,000 – (FPPG: 83.5)

Are you tired of seeing this guys name on the lineup card? You shouldn’t be. Hatton continues to be an excellent value play week in and week out. With an average FPPG of 83.5 Hatton’s price does not match his potential. Since I started picking him two weeks ago, he has finished T25 and T16. I would like a little more out of him, but I think he is trending in the right direction. Hopefully he can keep climbing the leader board and get into the top 10 this week.

Pick #3

3. Tony Finau – $8,200 – (FPPG: 72.8)

Sometimes, I wonder if Tony picked the wrong sport. Don’t get me wrong, he is a hell of a golfer, but word on the street is that he might be the most athletic guy on tour. Good athletes usually follow the money. With his frame, he could be catching passing in the NFL, or dunking on fools in the NBA, but instead he chasing a white ball around for a living. Hopefully, this week, he finds away to get the ball in the hole in fewer strokes than everyone else. He been playing nicely as of late, 5th at the BMW, T4 at the WGC, and T3 at the 3M Open. That is 3 top fives in his last five starts. Is a win coming? I sure hope so.

Pick #4

4. Mackenzie Hughes – $5,200 – (FPPG: 53.9)

The FPPG is god awful, but he has had two nice finishes back to back. He finished T10 at the BMW and T13 at The Northern Trust. Hughes is one of those guys that I am hoping has a great week and no one else picks him. If you watched the BMW Championship coverage, Mac had to make an up and down on 18 to get into the Tour Championship. No big deal right? WRONG, the last place finisher at last years Tour Championship walked away with $400K. Essentially, Hughes earned $400K by making par on 18 at the BMW. “Oh, no shit aye?”

Pick #5

5. Daniel Berger – $9,100 – (FPPG: 81.6)

Daniel Berger has been one of my favorite picks in Draft Kings lately and he has not disappointed. Two weeks ago when I picked him for The Northern Trust, he finished third. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Berger is a proven performer and I am going back to the well this week. An added bonus, he is a client of Altus Performance. I wrote about a great podcast by Altus Performance on my last post. Follow this link (Earn Your Edge podcast) to read more about that.

Pick #6

6. Webb Simpson – $11,000 – (FPPG: 89.4)

I love having a nice healthy budget for my last pick. In this case, I used almost all of it to select Webb Simpson. Webb has been on a tear this year. He has two wins and nine top tens so far. I think he can cap off a great season with a win at the Tour Championship. Webb enters the week 4th in the FedEx Cup. With this new Tour Championship system, he will start the week -6, four back of the leader, Dustin Johnson. He is my pick to win the tournament this week and the FedEx Cup. The winner of the FedEx cup gets $10 milly. Webb, lets get this bread!

Those are my six picks for this weeks Tour Championship. It is a weird format this week with DJ sitting at -10 to start the week, but the drama is the same nonetheless. Realistically, only half the field has an outside shot of winning the $10 million bucks. I think all of the guy starting at -3 are long shots, but it will all depend on how the course plays. If we get similar course conditions as last week, only about five guys have a chance at this thing. In any event, we will see it all play out this weekend. Good luck to anyone entering a Draft Kings contest this week.

As always,

Enjoy the chase!
