#womenworthwatching

This week, Champions Golf Club in Houston, TX is hosting the 75th United States Women’s Open. In the run up to the event, the USGA has been using #womenworthwatching to promote the event. I think it is a fantastic campaign and so today I wanted to share with you a couple of reasons why I find women’s game WORTH WATCHING. Let’s jump in!

The Women’s Game is more relatable than the Men’s

Back in September, during the Men’s U.S. Open, I posted a blog arguing that the golf ball goes to far. If you would like to read that post, follow this link -> (Into the Twittersphere – Does the golf ball go too far?). The example I used to make my case, came from the final round on Sunday. On the par five 9th hole at Winged Foot, Bryson Dechambeau and Mathew Wolff hit drives of 374 yards and 388 yards respectively.

Now, I don’t know about you, but even on my best days, I can’t hit my driver that far.

My game is going to look a lot more similar to an LPGA Tour player than a PGA Tour player. I am humble enough to admit that.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at the Trackman data below for the LPGA Tour Averages.

LPGA Tour Averages (By: Trackman Golf)

My most recent Trackman data shows that I have a driver swing speed of about 106 mph. That would place me 12 mph faster than the average LPGA Tour player and slower than the PGA Tour average by 8 mph. When I suggest that the ladies game is more relatable, it is because the clubs they are hitting for certain shots are a lot closer to the club I would be hitting in the same situation.

Ever watched the PGA Tour and wondered how the hell such and such player is hitting an 8 iron from 200 yards out?

Well, that doesn’t happen when you watch the LPGA Tour. The club an LPGA player is going to hit for a 200 yard shot is going to be a lot closer to the same club that you need for that shot as well.

Very simply, these #womenworthwatching hit the golf ball more like I do then the men.

Similar Ballpark’s

When I lived in San Diego, California, I was a member at a club that tipped out at 6,722 yards. At this weeks U.S. Women’s Open the players will face two different courses. The Cypress Creek course at Champions Golf Club will play as a par 71 and will max out at 6,731 yards. The Jackrabbit course, will play as a par 71 as well and has 6,558 yards.

For Women’s golf toughest test, the ladies will be challenged by a course that plays 8 yards longer than my former home club.

Of course, the conditions will be wildly different, but the length of the holes will be very similar to my former home club. Watching these #womenworthwatching navigate these holes will give me greater insight as to how I should be approaching my rounds of golf. They will be faced with similar shots and decisions that I am faced with every round that I play.

For example lets look at the length of the par three’s and par five’s on the Cypress Creek course.

Yardages (By: USGA)

Look’s a lot like what you would see at your local club from the blue tees doesn’t it?

The ladies play on courses that are going to closely resemble the tees you play at your local club. Case and point, Men’s U.S. Open at Winged Foot played at 7,477 yards.

These Women are the Best of the Best

If the best of the best is putting their talents on display, then I am interested in watching. And make no mistake, these ladies are some of the best golfers in the world; man or women.

They may not hit it as far as the men, and their games may not look like what you normally see on the PGA Tour, but trust me, these ladies can play. And their games are going to look at lot more familiar than the men’s.

Until next time,

Enjoy the chase!
